Sirtuins (SIRT1-7) are a family of proteins involved in cellular regulation, DNA repair, metabolic control and stress resistance. They are NAD+-dependent — they require NAD+ as a co-substrate to function. Trans-resveratrol is a direct SIRT1 activator, reducing the amount of NAD+ required for sirtuin activity.
Because sirtuins require NAD+ to function, trans-resveratrol's SIRT1-activating effect is limited by available NAD+.
